Finance Areas

First, consider the different niches within the broad topic area of finance. Some of these include banking, investing, insurance, corporate finance, accounting, and real estate. Within each of these niches, there are subtopics that could interest you. For example, for most areas, you can choose between helping individuals or helping businesses (commercial). You can also pull in experience you have in other fields. For example, if your undergraduate degree is in engineering, you might do well in real estate development or if your undergraduate degree is in business, you might do well in corporate finance.

Choosing the Right Career Path

With so many options, it can be confusing to choose the best career path for you. One of the best ways to find the right path is to start your education by taking some more general career classes that cover a number of topic areas. Keep in mind that there’s no wrong choice. If you begin your education with a specialization in insurance and discover that it isn’t for you, there’s a lot of overlap with other areas of finance, so you can pretty easily transition into another specialization. Don’t be afraid to change your mind.

Your love for a specific area isn’t the only thing to consider. While it is important to be happy at your job, you should also think about:

  • Salary – if you have a certain lifestyle that you want to maintain, check out the salaries you can expect in the different areas of finance to ensure that you’ll continue to earn the money you want.
  • Location – some areas of finance are pretty open in terms of location – accountants are needed everywhere for example. Others are not and may require you to move to New York or another city in order to find job opportunities in the field.
